How to Wash Hair Extensions: The KMH Studio Guide

  • 2 min read

Proper washing is one of the most important steps in maintaining beautiful, healthy hair extensions. The products you use and the way you wash your hair can significantly impact the longevity of your extensions and the health of your natural hair.

At KMH Studio, we want your extensions to stay soft, seamless, and beautiful between appointments! Follow these simple washing guidelines to protect your investment and keep your hair looking its best.

Brush Before You Wash

Before stepping into the shower, gently brush through your hair to remove any tangles or knots.

Always start at the ends and work your way up while supporting the extension attachment area with your hand. This helps prevent unnecessary tension and shedding.

Thoroughly Wet Your Hair

Allow warm water to fully saturate your hair before applying shampoo!

Avoid flipping your head upside down while washing, as this can create tangles and unnecessary stress on your extensions.

Shampoo the Scalp

Apply shampoo directly to your scalp and gently massage using your fingertips.

Focus on cleansing the scalp rather than scrubbing the lengths of your hair. As you rinse, the shampoo will naturally cleanse the mid-lengths and ends.

For best results, use professional, extension-safe products recommended by your stylist!

Condition the Mid-Lengths and Ends

Conditioner is essential for keeping extensions soft and hydrated!

Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding the extension attachment points whenever possible. Applying conditioner directly to the attachment area may cause slipping or buildup over time.

Allow the conditioner to sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Use a Hair Mask Weekly

Hair extensions do not receive natural oils from your scalp, making hydration especially important.

We recommend incorporating a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask once a week to maintain softness, shine, and overall extension health!

Dry Your Hair Properly

After washing, gently squeeze excess water from your hair using a soft towel.

Avoid aggressively rubbing your hair, as this can cause tangling and breakage.

Before blow drying:

  • Apply a heat protectant

  • Detangle gently

  • Support extension rows while brushing

  • Ensure attachment points are fully dry

Never go to bed with wet extensions!

KMH Pro Tip

The less frequently you wash your extensions, the longer they typically last.

Most extension clients find success washing their hair every 3–5 days, depending on their lifestyle, activity level, and hair type.

Your stylist can help create a personalized routine that works best for you!
